Andy Murray has undergone hip resurfacing surgery in London, the British tennis great told his Instagram followers on Tuesday.
The two-time Wimbledon champion had been weighing up the pros and cons of the operation, which involves putting a metal plate into the joint, in one last bid to prolong a career plagued by injury.
The 31-year-old double Olympic gold medallist had previously said ahead of this month's Australian Open earlier that he intended to retire following the 2019 edition of Wimbledon.
"I underwent a hip resurfacing surgery in London yesterday (Monday) morning... feeling a bit battered and bruised just now but hopefully that will be the end of my hip pain," Murray said on Instagram.
Italian coach banned for head-butting rival

The coach of Italian Serie C team Lucchese has been given a five-month ban for head-butting a member of the opposing team's staff and telling a player to break an opponent's legs.
Footage of the match showed the shaven-headed Giancarlo Favarin head-butting Gaetano Mancino, assistant coach of rivals Alessandria, during a brawl at the end of a 2-2 draw between their teams on Sunday.
Mancino was caught off-balance and knocked to the ground by the blow.
Serie C's disciplinary tribunal said in a statement that Favarin made "blasphemous remarks" during the match and "invited his own player to 'break the legs' of an opponent."
He also "began a slanging match with a member of the opposing team's staff at the peak of which he hit the latter with a violent head butt, making him fall to the ground ".
Benatia joins Qatari club Al-Duhail

Moroccan centre-back Medhi Benatia has left Italian giants Juventus for Qatar's Al-Duhail in a deal worth up to 10 million euros ($11.4 million), the Serie A club announced on Monday.
Juventus said in a statement that Al-Duhail will pay eight million euros in two instalments for Benatia as well as a further two million euros in bonuses.
The defender made 59 appearances for Juventus since arriving in 2016, winning two Serie A and domestic cup titles and the Italian Super Cup.
However the 31-year-old fell out of favour with coach Massimiliano Allegri following the return of Leonardo Bonucci last summer from AC Milan.
Holders Chelsea draw Man Utd in FA Cup
AFP
Defending champions Chelsea will host Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup, while fourth-division side Newport County could meet Manchester City.
United defeated Arsenal in the fourth round last week to record an eighth straight victory under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but face another tough tie after Monday's draw paired them with Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea.
Welsh club Newport, who are 14th in League Two, forced a replay at home to Middlesbrough after scoring an injury-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the Riverside over the weekend.
Newport beat Premier League opponents Leicester in round three and could book a clash with Pep Guardiola's City if they upset Boro in next week's replay.
