Pakistan spinner Yasir Shah became the fastest player to 200 Test wickets, getting the landmark scalp in just his 33rd Test.
The previous record was set 82 years ago by Australian spinner Clarrie Grimmett, who required 36 Tests to reach the landmark.
India Ravichandran Ashwin also came close to the record, but he needed 37 matches to reach 200 wickets, while Australia's Dennis Lillee and Pakistan's Waqar Younis needed 38.
Shah entered the record books about half-an-hour into the morning session of the fourth day of the final Test against New Zealand when he dismissed William Sommerville.
He has already taken 27 wickets across the three Tests in the series so far.
