Ruman improves in Tokyo

Country’s best archer Ruman Sana became 10th in the qualification round of men’s individual recurve event at the Ready Steady Tokyo test event for next year’s Olympic Games after scoring 662 out of 720 points in Tokyo, Japan yesterday.

Even though the 24-year-old bettered his qualification score [631] from the Munich Archery World Cup (Stage-4) earlier this month, it was less than what he scored [676] on way to winning a bronze medal in World Archery Championships in Netherlands last month.

However, Ruman is happy with his qualification score as he finished better than the last two events, and will get comparatively weaker opponent in the elimination round.

“My target was to finish among top eight in the qualification round and I was at number eight at one stage before the sudden rain and wind at the venue. After completion of first-phase 36 arrows, I had a good score with 59 and 58 out of 60 but I could not keep the tempo.

“However, I am happy to finish among the top ten, who all are quality archers and came here after qualifying for the next Olympics,” Ruman told The Daily Star over phone yesterday.

The archer from Khulna said that he tried to play his natural game and was happy with finishing 10th among 67 archers in qualification round.

Ruman will play his first elimination match against 55th-ranked Sultan Duzelbayev of Kazakhstan on July 16.

“The elimination round will be held in two target boards, which will also be followed in Tokyo Olympics. So the elimination round of this competition is very important for the participants. After the qualification round, my target is to win at least one or two games and if I can achieve my target, then it will really help me during the Olympic Games,” Ruman said, adding that no archer in this competition is weak; rather everyone has equal strength.
