Messi’s €700 million buyout clause expired: reports
Lionel Messi's €700 million buyout clause at Barcelona reportedly expired at the end of the 2019-20 season and is no longer valid, Cadena SER reports.
Spain's premier radio network claim to have seen a copy of Messi's contract.
They report that while Messi signed a four-year deal with Barcelona in 2017 (from 2020-2021), the final year of that was optional. Reportedly, the buyout clause does not extend to the optional, upcoming, season.
In that regard, the buyout clause does not exist if the player has chosen to break his contract with effect at the end of the 2019/20 season. The end date of this campaign is the main stumbling block in any negotiations and what could lead to a legal battle.
