Heavy ban on 5 hockey officials
The executive committee of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) yesterday imposed hefty bans and fines on two officials each of Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club and Mohammedan Sporting Club and a match official for their involvement in unruly incidents during the postponed match of this year's league-decider.
The apex committee of the federation handed these punishments after receiving recommendations from the disciplinary committee. A high-official of the BHF informed that these punishments were taken in light of the postponed match, the history of transgression by these individuals over the last two years were also taken into account when considering the amount of punishment.
As per the decisions, Mohammedan's former captain Ariful Haque Prince and the club's manager Asaduzzaman Chandan were given five years' suspension from all hockey-related activities related along with a one-lakh taka fine each.
General secretary of Mariner Youngs Club Hasan Ullah Khan Rana was handed the same punishment while the club's manager Nazrul Islam was given three years' suspension along with Tk 50,000 fine.
Nazirul Islam Nazu, the official who was the judge of that match, was given a three-year ban on acting as a technical official in hockey matches for being unable to handle the situation.
The four club officials were adjudged to have threatened the umpires by bringing fans on to the ground during the ill-fated match which took place on June 7. The match was tied 1-1 when the brawl took place, forcing the match officials to postpone it.
Last month, an executive committee meeting decided to deem the match result as a draw, handing effectively Mohammedan the league title.
Meanwhile, yesterday's meeting also decided to relegate former champions Usha Krira Chakra to the first division for not taking part in the premier league this season.
