Fahad stuns German Grand Master
Even though Bangladesh got off to a losing start in the Inaugural FIDE Online World Chess Olympiad -- suffering three straight defeats in Pool A of Division-2 -- IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman was able to stun German GM Engel Luis and snatch a victory in the first round today.
Bangladesh lost 1.5-4.5 to Germany in the first round. Fahad pulled a victory over German GM Engel Luis but Bangladesh still succumbed to a defeat in the first round as GM Reefat Bin Stattar drew against GM Wangner Dennis while GM Ziaur Rahman, WIM Rani Hamid and WIM Sharmin Sultana Shirin and Ahmed Wahlijah lost their respective boards.
Bangladesh suffered their second consecutive defeat when they lost 2-4 to a strong Belarus.
WFM Noshin Anjum beat WFM Tarasenka Aliaksandra while GM Niaz Murshed and GM Reefat drew against GM Aleksandrov and GM Stupak respectively.
However, WFM Nazrana Khan Eva, WCM Samiha Sharmin Shimmi and CM Tahsin Tajwar Zia lost their respective boards.
In the third round, Bangladesh extended their losing streak to three by losing 2.5-3.5 to Belgium, who qualified from Division-3.
GM Reefat and WIM Rani Hamid beat Kastriot Memeti and Annelies Cuvelier while GM Niaz drew with Lennet Lenaerts in the third round. WIM Sharmin Sultana, IM Fahad and WFM Noshin Anjum however lost their boards.
Bangladesh will play another three rounds tomorrow against Australia, Bulgaria and Kyrgyzstan respectively as top three of the 10 teams will progress to the Top Division.
