Bangladesh Army chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, the incumbent president of Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) alongside secretary general Syed Shahed Reza are all set to retain top two posts of the country's Olympic body as 33 candidates submitted their nominations against 37 posts yesterday for the December 22 polls.

The remaining candidates are also likely to be elected unopposed as Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, Kazi Nabil Ahmed, Lieutenant General (retd) M Mainul Islam, Anjan Chowdhury Pintu and Mahbuba Ara Begum Gini submitted their nominations against five vice-president posts while Ashikur Rahman Miku, Intekhabul Hamid Apu and Nazib Ahmed submitted their nominations against three deputy secretary general posts.

Meanwhile in the treasurer post, AK Sarkar has no competition.

Of 27 executive members, 22 candidates also submitted their nominations in line with the recognised criterion as four member posts - one representative of International Olympic Committee, one from regional women's sports association, one Olympian and one from service teams– remained vacant, informed assistant returning officer Niazul Hasan Khan.

"We will now scrutinise the nomination papers and publish a draft candidate list," informed Khan.

After holding the hearing on the rejected nomination papers on December 13, the election commission will publish the legal candidate list on December 15, after which the candidates can withdraw their nominations on December 17.
