Argentina playmaker Lionel Messi spoke on the criticism leveled at him regarding his abilities not being the same as before due to age, following Argentina's 2-0 win over Peru in their 2022 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Messi was heavily involved at the start of the second half and made it clear that he wants to continue fighting for the Argentine jersey.

"I am happy for the victory; we needed it after the game the other day, which we could not win. We were superior. We played a great game, we converted, we created situations," Messi said.

"We were superior from the beginning, with many chances to score. It is important to win in the knockouts, which are always difficult," he added.

Messi compared the game to the match against Paraguay and felt that the conversion of chances was crucial in this game. "The second half the other day was good. We were superior but we missed the goal. Today we continued in the same line but we converted."

There were suggestions in local media that at 33, Messi was not playing at the level that he has been for years. "I try to give maximum and I see myself able to do it to help the group and keep fighting for the shirt. I feel good and if the coach decides I am, I'll be me. I feel good to continue adding games and victories like this one," he said.
