‘Normal thing would have been to kill the players at the break’
Spain let in three first half goals in their Nations League encounter against England and their coach Luis Enrique said that he was nice to his players at half-time although ‘the normal thing would have been to kill the players at the break’.
Luis Enrique said he chose not to be critical of his players at the break in search of a reaction.
“It was not our best night, that's clear," Luis Enrique said in his postgame press conference. "The first half was awful, we have to recognise that.
“Each coach has their own method," he added. "The normal thing would have been to kill the players at the break but I was wonderful with them. I encouraged them, I didn't change anything.
The former Barcelona coach has a reputation of showing tough love to his players with the Spanish media once questioning him during his tenure as Barca coach, whether he ‘treated the players like schoolboys.’ Last night England raced to a three-goal lead at the break but Spain fought back in the second half with goals from Paco Alcacer and Sergio Ramos.
“Everything has a positive: it was a good second half. Ball circulation improved, we pressed better, pushed them back into their area. We had chances to come back,” Enrique said.
