Kiron released
Mahfuza Akter Kiron, the women's wing chairman of Bangladesh Football Federation and Council member of FIFA, was released from Kashimpur jail yesterday afternoon.
“The release order reached jail late on Tuesday night. She was released at 2:00pm yesterday [Wednesday],” Liakat Hossain, the lawyer of the football official, told The Daily Star yesterday.
“We will follow regular legal procedures and appeal for permanent bail or an extension of the bail on April 2,” Liakat informed, adding that his client has broken down mentally by the whole ordeal.
Kiron, also an executive member of the Asian Football Confederation [AFC], was arrested and sent to jail on March 16 in a defamation case filed four days earlier by a sports organiser for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Kiron is supposed to stand in the AFC polls during its 29th congress in Kuala Lumpur on April 6. FIFA and AFC officials had contacted BFF over the week, expressing their concern over her arrest.
