Kings closer to title
Bashundhara Kings inched closer to the title of the Bangladesh Premier League with an emphatic 3-0 win over Arambagh KS at the Rafique Uddin Bhuiya Stadium in Mymensingh yesterday.
With their 18th win in 19 matches, Bashundhara Kings raised their tally to 55 points, four ahead of second-placed Abahani, who played a match more than the Independence Cup winners. Bashundhara Kings still need nine points from their five remaining matches to ensure their first-ever title in debut season. The task may be easier if six-time champions Abahani drop points in any of their four remaining matches. Arambagh stayed at fifth position with 26 points from 20 matches.
The tie between hosts Arambagh KS and Bashundhara Kings resumed from where it was stopped on the previous day due to heavy rain, and the visitors, who beat Arambagh 3-2 in home match in Nilphamari, had to wait for 54 minutes to break the deadlock, thanks to a spot-kick converted by Marcos Vinicius. Arambagh defender Ikbol Babakhonov fell on the rain-soaked pitch while attempting to clear a cross from Hemanta Vincent Biswas and the ball hit the hand of the Uzbek defender. Referee Bhuban Mohan pointed to the spot and Vinicius dispatched the spot-kick comfortably.
Costa Rican forward Daniel Colindres doubled the lead in the 68th minute after nutmegging one defender inside the six-yard box following a low cross from Bakhtiyar Duyshobekov, who again fed Colindres to wrap up the victory in the 76th minute.
Bakhtiyar’s cross was tapped in by Colindres as Bashundhara extended their winning streak to 13 matches.
