Hair tug gets Ronaldo in hot waters with UEFA
Cristiano Ronaldo and the Champions League are football's great love affair; two commercial behemoths that keep untold millions in revenues rolling through the gates.
The equation is a simple one: UEFA gives its most famous son the stage to shine, and Ronaldo pays the federation back in kind with cartloads of goals and bare-chested celebrations.
However, things did not quite go according to plan as Ronaldo was red-carded during his Champions League debut for Juventus. UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo following his red card for tugging on the hair of Valencia defender Jeison Murillo.
A hearing will take place on September 27 after which the number of games Ronaldo will be banned for is to be announced. A red-card obviously results in a one-game automatic ban but in case of serious offences, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (UCED) can increase the ban.
If he is banned for two games or more, that certainly will see him miss out on both games against former club Manchester United. This was the 11th red card of his career and his first in the Champions League. Previously, he had been sent off four times with Manchester United and six times with Real Madrid.
While Juve cannot appeal the automatic one-match ban however they do have the right to appeal in case the forward is banned for additional games.
