FIFA asks BFF not to hold elections amidst coronavirus pandemic
FIFA, football's governing body, advised Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) not to hold the elections amidst the coronavirus pandemic, a BFF official said today.
The BFF had postponed its much talked about elections on March 27 after the incumbent executive members and the delegates voiced concerns over BFF's intention to hold elections on April 20 amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Later, FIFA authorized and extended the tenure of the incumbent committee --which had expired on April 30 -- to hold elections when the coronavirus situation improved in Bangladesh.
"Yesterday [Tuesday], we received a letter from FIFA, and they wanted to know about the BFF's AGM [annual general meeting]. They wrote to us that it won't be wise to hold the elections until the health and sanitation situation in Bangladesh allow us. They have also asked us to keep them updated on AGM and elections," BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag told The Daily Star today.
Although BFF postponed its elections in March, they continued preparing voter lists, which was completed on June 7 amidst the coronavirus pandemic and it is believed that FIFA instructions came in wake of the BFF vice presidents Badal Roy and Mohiuddin Ahmed Mohi letter to the organization. Both Roy and Mohi made requests to the game's governing body to defer the upcoming BFF polls due to the coronavirus crisis.
