East Bengal try to woo Man Utd after Bashundhara negotiations fall through
After failed negotiations with the Bashundhara Group of Bangladesh, India's leading football club East Bengal are now in talks with EPL giants Manchester United for ownership of one of oldest football clubs in the country.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly, who is facilitating the deal, told the media in Kolkata on Tuesday that negotiations are on with the 'Red Devils' and a few others and a clear picture will emerge in about two weeks.
East Bengal had also talked with the diversified conglomerate Bashundhara Group but it did not fructify.
Ganguly said "yes we have spoken to them (Manchester United) and others also. It will take 10-12 more days to know who will be the entity."
Asked whether Manchester United are coming as an investor, the Indian cricket icon said: "No, (they are coming) as an owner." He, however, declined to elaborate.
"It takes some time. First, let it reach a stage, then we will make a comment. I will speak only after there's a concrete development," Ganguly said.
East Bengal have, of late, struggled to find investors in the backdrop of the club's poor results.
The Indian club finished a lowly ninth in their maiden Indian Soccer League season with nine losses, eight draws and just three wins. In the last ISL edition, East Bengal ended up at the bottom of the table with just one win from 20 matches.
