Brothers earn crucial win
Brothers Union raised their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Bangladesh Premier League with a 2-0 win over already-relegated Team BJMC at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
The fifth win in 23 matches helped fallen giants Brothers Union leapfrog to 10th position in the 13-team table with 21 points, equal with Rahmatganj MFS and two points ahead of 12th-placed NoFeL SC.
With Team BJMC already relegated from the top-flight, three teams -- Brothers (21 points), Rahmatganj (21 points) and NoFeL SC (19 points) – are in intense battle to avoid the drop as the second team.
If NoFeL SC drop points in their final match against Sheikh Jamal DC, then Brothers and Rahmatganj will avoid relegation before playing their final match against Arambagh KS and Mohammedan SC respectively.
Brothers had the upper hand in yesterday’s match as they dominated team BJMC from the outset, but they took 52 minutes to break the deadlock. Having survived from an attack, Brothers Union launched a counter-attack down the right flank with Shakil Ahmed running down to the deep to cut the ball back for Sudanese striker James Moga, who fired home from inside the box.
Team BJMC came close to equalising in the 68th minute when Uzbek forward Otabek darted into the box, but was denied by Brothers goalkeeper Sujan Chowdhury, who dived to his left before Moga sealed Brothers Union’s victory by nodding home a well-judged cross from Mannaf Rabbi in the 89th minute.
