Arambagh face Brothers today
Defending champions Arambagh will take on Brothers Union in the first quarterfinal of the Walton Independence Cup, scheduled to kick off at 4:30pm, at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.
The Motijheel-based outfit won both their matches in group stages – 2-1 against Team BJMC and 3-1 against a powerful Saif SC – to emerge as Group A champions.
They have scored five goals against two conceded, with three of those goals coming from Paul Emile and the other two from young local forwards.
Brothers, on the other hand, squeezed through as runners-up of Group C courtesy of two draws. They have scored one and conceded one too in their two matches, a reflection of their compact defence but lack of finishers in front of goal.
Maruful Haque has moulded a very enterprising team for Arambagh and they will be the favourites going into today's match, but they will be wary of the threat from Brothers' two Brazilian forwards – Vieira Lima and Everton Santos.
The veteran coach had opined before the tournament that it will be difficult to replicate last year's performance and he would be satisfied with a top-four finish. If his side can tame Syed Nayeemuddin's unpredictable Brothers Union today, they will achieve that target before setting a new target.
