Abahani end 31 years of wait for Independence Cup title

Abahani lifted the Independence Cup title for the first time since 1990, beating defending champions Bashundhara Kings 3-0 in the final at the Birshreshtha Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur today.
The charges of Mario Lemos dominated throughout the match and despite missing a few close chances in the first half, cruised to the victory, thanks to a 54th-minute opener from Rakib Hossain followed by a brace from Brazilian striker Dorielton Gomes.
This was also Abahani's first domestic title since the 2018 Federation Cup, with Kings winning all the five major trophies since.
Dorielton finished the tournament as the top scorer with four goals, the Brazilian adding two on the night to two he had scored during the group stages.
While Dorielton justified his inclusion with two goals after missing out on the semifinal with injury, at the expense of Nabib Newaz Jibon, Bashundhara Kings were missing their influential midfielder Jonathan Fernandes badly, with the Brazilian badly injured in their semifinal fixture.
