Tough going for batsmen as bowlers benefit
On what was considered a difficult wicket for batsmen, Subashis Roy bagged five wickets to help Rangpur bundle out Barishal on 147 runs, the exact same score the hosts had managed in their first innings, on the second day of their fourth round National Cricket League encounter at the Cricket Garden in Rangpur yesterday.
In the Tier-1 match, Sohag Gazi managed to trap Rangpur in his spin web on the first day but it was now Subashis's turn. It was the second five-wicket haul in first class cricket for the right-arm quick bowler. Yesterday, Subashis trapped both Al Amin and Rafsan Mahmud, who top scored for Barishal with 40, leg-before and went on to bag Gazi's scalp as well as Barishal crumbled.
Robiul Haque and Tanbir Hayder chipped in with two wickets each for Rangpur. Barishal then lost three more wickets while negotiating 47 overs to eventually post 77 for three at stumps and now, a result looks imminent.
In the Tier-2 match at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox's Bazar, Chattogram managed 223 for the loss of eight wickets as Dhaka Division made things difficult for Mominul Haque and Co.
Mominul got out for a duck after Chattogram lost openers Sadikur Rahman and Pinak Ghosh cheaply but captain Yasir Ali's team-high 60 brought stability back to their innings.
In the other Tier-2 match, Dhaka Metropolis reached 267 for eight against Sylhet, courtesy of a 104-run third-wicket partnership between Marshall Ayub and Shamsur Rahman at the Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi. Ayub struck a 147-ball 74 laced with 11 fours and, together with Shamsur, pulled Dhaka Metropolis out of the deep end after the loss of two wickets early on.
However, Khaled Ahmed scalped four wickets as Sylhet regained their foothold before end of play.
At the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna, none of Rajshahi's batsmen were able to capitalise on their good starts aside from a fifty from Farhad Hossain as the side reached 202 for five in reply to Khulna's 309 in the first innings. Soumya Sarkar was once again among the wickets, bagging two, while Al Amin also grabbed two for Khulna.
HIGHLIGHTS
- 29-year-old Subashis Roy, who stormed onto the first class scene with a seven-wicket haul against Barishal on his debut, claimed his second five-for yesterday, 11 years after his dream start in the nation's top flight, with Barishal once again the victims.
- Momiul Haque may have over 5,000 runs in first-class cricket but he has struggled to get going in this year's National Cricket League. After being dropped from the Tigers' squad following the Asia Cup, he has not been able to score big in the domestic circuit so far despite getting a few starts. Yesterday, the Chattogram batsman fell for a duck against Dhaka Division yesterday.
- Soumya Sarkar, who bagged five wickets in the third round of the NCL, found more success with the ball as he grabbed two wickets against Rajshahi.
