The best of Mustafizur is yet to come, believes Bashar
Bangladesh selector Habibul Bashar insisted that left-arm paceman Mustafizur Rahman still has a lot to offer to Bangladesh cricket and that he could play an important role for the Tigers in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia next month.
"Mustafizur is a senior player and a proven campaigner. Maybe he hasn't been able to deliver as much as expected of him in overseas matches. But I think he can still give his best. In fact, the best of Mustafizur is yet to come," Bashar told the media today in Mirpur.
Mustafizur hasn't been at his best lately. Playing a total of 10 matches this year, the 27-year-old scalped only six wickets.
The concern for the Bangladesh team management grows when considered that Mustafziur's bowling average in 2022 is 43.33, which is almost double his career average of 21.06.
Also, he bowled at an economy of 8.38 this year. His overall economy is 7.73.
Considered the death-over specialist, Mustafizur has not only been ineffective but also remained the main reason behind the Tigers' downfall in a number of matches lately. It was Mustafizur's 17-run 17th over against Afghanistan in their Asia Cup opener that saw the game slip away from the Tigers.
Despite his poor run of form, Bashar indicated that Mustafizur would be a key member of the Bangladesh side in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
"It is very important to have someone as experienced as Mustafizur in the World Cup, especially in the T20 format," Bashar said.
"He is working on different types of deliveries. His stock delivery is slower and cutter. But he is not relying entirely on those now. Because he knows that these type of deliveries aren't as effective in overseas conditions as they are in the subcontinent. He is working on his variety and I think he will do better in the World Cup," Bashar added.
