RCC mayor vows to help Chamily
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton yesterday said that he would take responsibility for the treatment of former national women's team cricketer Chamily Khatun, who has been suffering from a back injury for eight years which recently left her paralysed.
There has been an outpouring of support following reports of Chamily's condition, with cricketers Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman and the Bangladesh Cricket Board offering their assistance.
However, the Rajshahi mayor said that he would attempt to alleviate Chamily and her family's poverty and make arrangements for her treatment during a visit to her Dargapara house yesterday.
"I am sorry that I had no idea of her passing days in utter poverty," the mayor, who also provided cash assistance of Tk 1 lakh, told reporters. "She did not tell anyone in so many years about requirement of her treatment out of her shyness for seeking help of others."
"I will talk to solvent citizens and arrange proper treatment," he said, adding that he would bring the matter to the attention of the Prime Minister.
