Mashrafe echoes Shakib’s sentiment
After Bangladesh Test captain Shakib Al Hasan stressed the importance of having a good cricketing culture in order to turn around the Tigers' Test fortunes, former skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza echoed the same sentiment.
Criticism regarding the Tigers' approach in the format intensified as Bangladesh, despite playing the format for 22 years, displayed yet another disappointing performance and were whitewashed in their recent two-match series against the West Indies.
Bangladesh will return to Test cricket after five months . Shakib opined that if the team management sit down, discuss and come to a decision before that, the Tigers can start getting results consistently in the next two and half years.
Mashrafe, too, urged that Shakib should be given enough support before being questioned as according to the former Bangladesh skipper, things won't change overnight.
"We were never a good Test team. We had won some matches at home in between and were making progress. But things took a tumble again. We never performed well regularly. We are a good ODI side and have been performing well in this format since 2015. One good thing in Test is that we have an experienced captain like Shakib but things will not change overnight," Mashrafe said yesterday.
Although both the former and current Bangladesh skippers are mulling over forming long-term plans to achieve success in the longest format, it will be interesting to see whether the off-the-field plans eventually materialise.
