Kohli wins Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award
India captain Virat Kohli and world champion weightlifter S Mirabai Chanu received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award -- India’s highest sports honour, today. The announcement was made by India’s Sports Ministry.
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award is given for spectacular and outstanding performance in the field of sports by an athlete over the duration of four years. Kohli, who was rested for the ongoing Asia Cup, has been in phenomenal form this year although his captaincy came under criticism following the 4-1 away series loss to England.
Kohli is the third Indian cricketer to be chosen for the honour after Little Master Sachin Tendulkar, who won the award in 1997 and MS Dhoni in 2007.
The awardees will receive a cash reward of Rs 7.5 lakh. The duo will receive their awards from the President of India a special ceremony, organized at Rashtrapati Bhawan on September 25.
