'I'm not an old school cricketer'
India captain Virat Kohli admitted he has “committed mistakes” during past tours of Australia, but said he doesn't regret them as they helped him learn.
Kohli has toured Australia twice before, and in the early days especially, he was involved in plenty of verbal battles. In an interview with Adam Gilchrist for Fox Sports, he has admitted he didn't know when to stop.
“I didn't have a good understanding of where to draw the line and stuff like that...,” said Kohli. “Those are things that I, I wouldn't say I regret, but definitely I look at them as mistakes. But mistakes that were important for me to commit so I can learn from them.”
Kohli suggested he has now changed, but more than that, he is proud of the fact that he did that by staying true to himself
“I learn from my own mistakes, I realise my own mistakes myself, and just kept correcting them through the journey. But (I'm) massively different from the last two tours, especially the first one. I was so bad.”
As India's captain Kohli will need to play a big role if India are to win.
Kohli has had a good time in Australia mostly – he has three centuries in Adelaide and five overall from previous tours – but that came after scores 11, 0, 23 and 9 in his first four innings in 2012.
“I was never a perfect mould of typical, old school cricketer,” he said. “I always just wanted to find my own way and I guess those things were a part of that journey.”
