Ganguly set to be BCCI president
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is all set to be the new Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, according to reports in Indian media. He is said to be the sole nominee for the post of president as the BCCI will return to being a democratic institution from October 23 after three years under a Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA).
According to the Times of India, Ganguly's imminent appointment was the result of a unanimous stand by BCCI members against the CoA in the form of a meeting in Mumbai on Sunday. Former BCCI presidents Anurag Thakur and N Srinivasan headed two powerful lobbies, each with their own candidate.
Thakur, who was backing Ganguly, eventually got his way and the former captain will submit his nomination papers on Monday, the deadline for submission.
India Today reports that Ganguly refused all other posts but the top job, which seemed to have paved the way for Srinivasan's candidate -- former India cricketer Brijesh Patel -- but 'with Patel's name not finding complete backing and BJP brass in BCCI in favour of handing reigns to Ganguly, the tide turned'.
Ganguly will, however, have to go in for a cooling off period from July 2020 under the new rules. He has been holding posts in Cricket Association of Bengal for the past five years where he currently serves as president and an administrator can only serve six years at a trot.
