Sprinters Sumaiya, Nasrin stay back home as unrest in Sri Lanka prompts event cancellation
Bangladesh's fastest woman Sumaiya Dewan and 400m runner Nusrat Jahan were supposed to take part in an invitational athletics championships in Sri Lanka next week but the authority concerned suspended the event following the economic turmoil and political unrest in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan authorities, on Monday, had let the Bangladesh Athletics Federation (BAF) know about the decision of the athletics championships being suspended as they are now unable to organise the tournament amid the chaotic situation in Sri Lanka.
"Everything was all right to stage the tournament and some other countries of the subcontinent were also supposed to take part in the championships but the sudden unrest in Sri Lanka made the tournament impossible. They suspended the championships last night," BAF general secretary Abdur Rakib Montu told the reporters today.
The championships were scheduled to take place from April 8 to 10 in Colombo and Sumaiya and Nusrat had been preparing to compete in the 100m and the 400m sprint, respectively.
