3 Jamaat-Shibir men held

Police arrested three Jamaat-Shibir men in Mithapukur upazila on Tuesday evening. The arrestees are Ekramul Haque, 45, and Mostafizur Rahman, 48, working council members of Jamaat and Younus Ali, 28, president of Mithapukur upazila unit Shibir. Md Robiul Alam, officer in-charge of Mithapukur police station, said the three were arrested on charge of attacking and killing police, obstructing the law enforcers from performing their duties, torching polling centres and snatching ballots during the January 5 national elections. The arrestees remained in hiding for long, he said.

Woman drug peddler jailed

A mobile court sentenced a female drug peddler to six months' imprisonment at Rasulganj village in Patgram upazila on Tuesday. The convict is Amina Khatun, 46, wife of Jarimuddin of the village, said court sources. Police in a drive arrested Amina along with 400 grams hemp at night and produced her before the court, led by executive magistrate Rafiqul Haque, which pronounced the verdict.

Train kills freedom fighter

A freedom fighter was crashed under the wheels of a train in Malgudam area near Shantahar railway station under Adamdighi upazila on Tuesday night. The deceased is Munsur Rahman, 67, a resident of Colony yard area and former commander of Muktijoddaya Sangsad Adamdighi upazila unit. A Parbottipur-bound Uttara Express train from Shantahar hit the FF, leaving him dead on the spot when he was passing the rail line at Shantahar-Parbottipur station. An unnatural death (UD) case was filed in this connection, said GRP police.

Woman killed in land dispute

An elderly woman was killed and her three nephews were injured in a clash over land dispute at Churkhai Namapara in Sadar upazila on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Samorta Banu, 60, wife late Nazar Ali of Churkhai Namapara. Samorta Banu's nephew Alal, a tempo driver had a long standing dispute over a piece of land with his neighbour Abdul Quader. When Alal and his brothers- Helal and Kalam- were going to Churkhai Bazar, Quader's men locked in an altercation over the issue with Alal and his brothers around 4.00 pm. At one stage Quader's men attacked on them with sticks and sharp weapons injuring them critically, police said. Samorita later died at hospital.
