Abducted boy rescued

Police rescued a madrasa boy of the district from a house in Jessore district town yesterday, five days after his abduction. The dead is Abdur Rahim, a student of class four at Harinakundo Dhakil madrasa. On Friday afternoon, the boy was abducted for Tk 5 lakh ransom at Kulbaria Bazar in Harinakundo upazila. Police later arrested one Uzzal Hossain, Atik Hossain, Jahid hasan and Nazmul Hossain for their alleged involvement in the abduction. According to confessional statements of the arrestees, Rahim was rescued from the house in Jessore town at 2:30pm yesterday, said ASP Hasanuzzaman.
10 rescued from traffickers

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) rescued three women and seven children while they were being trafficked to India through Boroachra frontier under Benapole Port police station yesterday. They hailed from Kalia village in Narail district. Rafiqul Islam, officer in-charge of 26 Benapole BGB camp, said on secret information, the border guards raided the area and rescued the women and kids while they were taken to India with promises of lucrative jobs. A case was filed in this connection, he said.
Man to die for murder

A Bagerhat court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife at Charkathi village in Kachua upazila in 2006. Judge SM Solaiman of the District and Sessions' Judge's court awarded death penalty to Muhit Sheikh, 47, son of Hasem Shekh of the area, in absentia. According to the prosecution, Muhit engaged in an altercation with his wife Shafia Begum over a trifling matter on October 13, 2006. At one stage, he beat her mercilessly, leaving her dead on the spot and fled the scene. Shahid Sheikh, brother of the deceased, then filed a murder case with Kachua police station. On October 24 in 2007, police submitted a charge sheet against Muhit.
15 hurt as villagers clash

At least 15 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Baroipara village in Madarganj Sadar upazila on Wednesday. Of the injured, nine were admitted to the upazila health complex while the rest given first aid. Locals said the clash took place over playing football at a paddy field in the area around 7:00pm. One group was led by Rafiqul while another by Samad, said police and locals.
