UZ chairman sent to jail

The newly elected Nazirpur Upzila Parisad Chairman Nazrul Islam Khan was sent to jail yesterday in a case for vandalising vehicles in the upazila during a BNP-led alliance's programme last year. Nazrul appeared before the Judicial Magistrate's Court, Pirojpur, and sought bail. The court rejected the bail prayer and sent him to jail. He was one of the 58 accused in a case filed with Nazirpur Police Station (PS) last year for vandalising vehicles on a road in the upazila during countrywide road blockade programme enforced by the BNP led alliance. Nazrul, also a vice-president of BNP district unit, was elected Chairman of Nazirpur Upazila Parishad in the second phase of upazila polls held on February 27.
Robbery at expat's house

Robbers looted valuables worth Tk10 lakh from an expatriate's house at Muhidpur village in Jakiganj upazila of the district early yesterday. Locals said a gang of armed robbers stormed into house of Abdus Sobhan, An expatriate in Saudi Arabia, at the village at around 3:00am by breaking open the door and held the family members hostage at gunpoint. They looted 13 tolas of gold ornaments, Tk 50,000, four mobile phone sets and other valuables. The robbers opened fire at Sobhan as he tried to resist them, leaving him injured. Later, the gang escaped with the booty. On information, police visited the spot.
Indian national held

A Indian national was arrested from Hili border under Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur on Monday afternoon.
The arrestee was identified as Md Amirul Sheikh, 38, son of late Khalil Sheikh of Dewligate village under Aligarh of India. BGB members said they caught him soon after he entered Bangladesh through Hili check post at around 3.30pm. Later, the BGB member handed him over to Hakimpur Police.
20 illegal structures demolished

Twenty illegal roadside shops in Thakurgaon town was demolished on Monday. District administration conducted the drive led by Executive Magistrate Mahfuzul Alam in response to a petition submitted by the Roads and Highways Department. The magistrate told this correspondent that they demolished 18 makeshift shops alongside the road in front of Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital and two illegal structures in front of Vocational Institute in the town.
Outlaw arrested

Police arrested a leader of outlawed Purbo Banglar Comunist Party from Charuliya village under Damurhuda upazila of the district on Monday afternoon. The arrested was identified as Kufan, 26, a regional leader of PBCP. Acting on secret information, law enforcers from Damurhuda Police Station raided the village at around 5:00pm and nabbed Kufan. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mr Ahsan Habib of Damurhuda Police Station said Kufan was wanted in several criminal cases, including for murder murder, robbery, and extortion.
Acid attack on schoolgirl

A drug addict threw acid on a schoolgirl at Char Bewtha village under Manikganj municipality on Sunday afternoon. Shahnaz Kazi, daughter of Milon Kazi of Char Bewtha village, is a class ten student of SK Government Girls' High School. She alleged drug addict Sadik of the village threw acid on her while she was taking a bath in a pond at around 4:00 pm. She was admitted to Manikganj Sadar Hospital. Victim's father Md Milon Kazi filed a case with Manikganj Sadar Police Station yesterday against Sadik, his father Belayet Hossain, mother Rokeya Begum and his grandfather Hossain Ali. Police are investigating the incident.
15 hurt as rival groups clash

At least 15 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over capture of a water body under Shibganj Police Station of the district yesterday.Of the injured, six were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while the rest given first aid at the upazila health complex.Police and locals said the clash ensued around 10:30am when Dalim Member and his men went to capture Satroshia beel. The supporters of Quayyum Reza swooped on them, leading a clash between the two sides.
