Jamaat man held

Police arrested a local Jamaat leader at a function marking the Independent Day at Dhabolguri High School filed in Dhabolguri village under Patgram upazila yesterday morning. The arrestee is Sultan Mahmud, assistant secretary of upazila unit Jamaat. Sultan was arrested on charge of carrying out sabotage activities in the area on December 19 last year, said sub-inspector Siddiqur Rahman of Patgram police station.
Arms peddler arrested

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested an alleged arms peddler along with a pistol, a magazine and three bullets in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night. The arrestee is Md Ekram Hossain Pramanik, 41, son of Shamsur Pramanik of Arifpur Hazirhat village in the upazila. On secret information, a team of Rab-12 raided the area and arrested Ekram along with the arms and bullets, said police.
Housewife found dead

Police recovered the body of a housewife from Chapadah village in Sadar upazila on Monday night. The deceased was identified as Hosne Ara, wife of Babu Miah of the village. Gopal Chandra, officer in-charge of Sadar police station, said Hosne Ara, daughter of Sadekul Islam of Kurarpara village, went missing since Wednesday. As a bad odour was coming out from a ditch besides the house of Babu in the evening, locals informed police. Police arrested Babu's parents Moksed Ali and Romana Begum in this connection. A case was filed.
Four houses gutted

At least four houses were gutted in a fire at Majherpara village in Bakshiganj upazila early Tuesday. Witnesses said the fire originating from a burning mosquito coil at a cattle house of farmer Majnu Miah of the village and soon engulfed the adjoining dwellings. Locals then doused the flame at 3:00am after two hours of frantic efforts. The affected house owners claimed that the loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 5 lakh.
Girl raped

A physically challenged teenage girl was violated allegedly by a day labourer at Jubirkhal village in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district on Monday night. The accused is Jobbar Ali, 47, of the village. He is son of three sons. Police and locals said Jobbar swooped on the victim's relative house and raped her. She was then rushed to Habiganj Sadar Hospital.
Teacher 'commits suicide'

Police recovered the hanging body of a schoolteacher from the tree at a garden in Charfassion municipality on Monday. The deceased was identified as Murari Mohan Roy, 58, a teacher of Goldarhat Secondary High School. Deceased's wife Prarthona Roy said Murari went out home around 9pm on Sunday for shopping and did not return since. Locals found his body in the area yesterday morning and informed the police. The reason behind the death could not be known immediately, said police.
Schoolgirl abducted

Police are yet to rescue a 14-year-old schoolgirl, who was abducted from Bhaluka uapzila on Sunday. Police and family sources said a gang of four allegedly led by Asadul Islam, 25, son of Mainuddin Fakir of Borta village, in a private car abducted the girl from Chandpur Joarder Bridge area when she was going to the school along with her classmates on Sunday morning. Asadul's family proposed to marry off the girl last month, but her parents refused as Asadul had already got married. The father of the girl filed a complaint with Bhaluka police station in connection with the abduction, said officer in-charge of the PS Abul Kalam Azad. The law enforcers are raiding different areas to rescue the girl and arrest the abductor, said police.
College student drowns

A college student drowned in a pond at MM College in Jessore district town on Sunday afternoon. The dead is Shubho, 20, an honours 6th semester student of the college and son of Jahid Hossain of Barandipara in the town. Family members said Shubho slipped into the pond on the college campus and drowned at 4:30 pm while taking bath with his friends as he did not know how to swim. Locals rescued Shubho from the pond and took him to 250-bed Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Urea production at JFCL stops

Urea production at Jamuna Fertilizer Company Ltd (JFCL) at Tarakandi in Sarishabari upazila came to a halt as the authorities yesterday shut down the industry for setting a compressor to increase gas pressure. Sources at JFCL said urea fertilizer production was hampered due to low gas pressure in the industry. Considering the issue, the authorities concerned decided to set a new compressor to ensure smooth gas supply for the production of the fertilizer. Following the announcement, the production of the industry came to a halt at 6:30am, said the soures.
Woman hurt in gun attack

A woman was seriously injured in a gun attack allegedly by her rivals over land dispute in the district town yesterday night. The injured is Kabita, 25, wife of Md Nion of Sarkerpara in the town. She was admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital. Locals and family sources said there was a longstanding conflict between Nion and his brother-in-law Shah Alom over the land. As a sequel to the conflict, a gang of criminals, allegedly led by Shah Alom, swooped on the house of Nion and opened fire, leaving Kabita seriously injured at 7:30pm. As the news of the incident spread, locals attacked the house of Shah Alam and broke the windows, fans and gate. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
