UPDF man held with arms

Army personnel arrested an alleged activist of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) along with a gun and three bullets in Baillyachhari area under Matiranga upazila yesterday. The arrestee is Nabin Chakma alias Babu, 25, son of Samir Dewan of Hajachhari area in Laxmichhari upazila. Officer in-charge of Guimara police station Abu Yousuf said on secrete information, an army team raided the area around 9:00am and arrested Nabin along with the arms and bullets. Meanwhile, through a press release Press and Information Secretary of UPDF Niran Chakma claimed that Nabin was inocent.
5 arrested on murder charge

Police arrested five people in Manikchhari upazila on Saturday night on charge of killing a young man. The deceased was identified as Zakir Hossain, 28, of Aksattyapara area in the upazila. The arrestees are Zakir's younger brother Mohammad Jahir Hossain, sisters Safali Bagum and Rupali Akter, Imam of a local mosque Mainul Haque and one Manik Hossain. Zakir was hacked to death by criminals at Aksattyapara in the upazila on Saturday morning. A case was filed in this connection, said officer in-charge of Manikchhari Police Station Keshab Chakrabarty.
Boy drowns in river

A schoolboy drowned in Mahanada River under Tentulia upazila of Panchagarh district on Saturday afternoon. The dead is Ridam, 10, son of Anwar Hossain of Domar upazila town in Nilphamari district. He was a student of Class-IV at a primary school in the area. Locals said, the boy went to his grandfather's house on Friday. He went to take a dip in the river along with a group of children and drowned. Later, his body was found floating on the river.
Woman 'commits suicide'

An elderly woman allegedly committed suicide as her prolonged illness became too unbearable for her at Radhanagar village in Sarishabari upazila early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Hamida Begum, 65, wife of late Taslim of the village. Police and family sources said, Hamida had been suffering from severe abdominal and chest pain for long. Her only son Saiful Islam, a farm labourer, could not afford to bear her treatment cost any more. Hamida along with her grand daughter Sathi, 9, went to bed on Saturday night. In the morning, her body was found hanging from the ceiling of the room, said Basirul Alam, sub-inspector of Sarishabari police station. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the SI.
