Five shops gutted

At least five shops were gutted in a fire at Dowlotgonj Mulimarket under Laksam upazila early yesterday. Locals said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop and soon engulfed the adjoining shops. On information, fire fighters rushed to the spot at 5:30am and doused the blaze. The affected shop owners claimed that the loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 15 lakh.
Rickshaw-puller found dead

A rickshaw puller was found dead in a septic tank in Dhanbari upazila yesterday. Deceased Mohammad Saju Miah, 28, went missing on Friday. The hands and legs of the body were tied with ropes. On information, police recovered Saju's body from the septic tank of a house owner in the area yesterday morning. Criminals might have killed Saju and dumped the body in the septic tank, said Mizanur Rahman, officer in-charge of Dhanbari Police Station. The body was sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Four bombs seized

Police recovered four bombs from a maize field near Doyel Brick Kiln at Boro Dudpatila village in Damurhuda upazila on Saturday afternoon. On secret information, a police team raided the field and seized the bombs. However, none was arrested in this connection, said Ahsan Habib, officer in-charge of Damurhuda Police Station.
Cop's bid to kill himself

A police constable attempted to commit suicide at Kyaju para police camp in Lama upazilla on Saturday night. Hailing from Chilmari area of Kurigram district, Md Asaduzzaman, 32, shot himself in the belly with his gun. He was then admitted to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) in critical condition. Md Shajahan Khan, officer in-charge of Lama Police Station, suspected Asaduzzaman tried to kill himself over a family feud.
3 Jamaat men jailed

A mobile court here on Saturday sentenced three Jamaat men to one year imprisonment each for planning to carry out subversive activities in Kaliganj upazila. Police said Asaduzzaman Sardar, 40, of Tarali village, Rafiqul Islam, 37, and Mosharaf Hossain, 35, of Pashchim Narayanpur village were arrested from different areas in the evening. Later, the arrestees were produced before the court, led by executive magistrate Sayed Faruk Ahmed, which pronounced the verdict.
Schoolboy murdered

A schoolboy was stabbed to death in Hashemia Madrasha area of the town early Saturday. The deceased was identified as Sadek, 15, a class X student of a local school and son of Gafuruddin of Uttar Pukuria village in Ukhia upazila. Family sources said Sadek was stabbed by a gang in the area around 11pm on Friday. He was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where he died on Saturday morning.
Fake medicine factory unearthed

Detective Branch (DB) of police unearthed a 'fake' veterinary medicine factory at Singa village in Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon. They also arrested two people in this connection. The arrestees are Md Shamim Hossain, 33, of Faridpur and Ishaque Ali, 28, of Singa in the district. Sub-inspector of Pabna DB police Rawshan Ali said on secret information, a team raided a house in the area and unearthed a fake factory operating in name of 'Premier Farma Vet' for long. The DB police also seized huge fake veterinary medicines during the drive.
Injured BCL man dies

A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist, who was injured in an attack by BNP men in Mukambazar area under Rajnagar upazila on February 27, died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital early yesterday. A group of BNP men stabbed Chatra League activist Sahin Miah, 20 in the area, leaving him critically injured. Shahin was rushed to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital and then shifted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. He succumbed to his injuries at around 3:00am.
5 Dakhil examinees expelled

Five Dakhil examinees in Pachbibi upazila of Joypurhat district were expelled for cheating in mathematics examination yesterday. The expellees are Md Kamruzzaman of Duroil Dakhil Madrasa, Monju Ara Begum of Mohabbatpur Fazil Madrasa, Md Taher Alam of Bagzana Madrasa, Md Younus Ali of Shirpa Dakhil Madrasa and Abdul Awal of Gorna Dakhil Madrasa in the upazila. They were expelled from Pachbibi Government Girls' High School centre around 12:00pm, said Ishat Ali, secretary of the centre.
