19 girls rescued from brothel

Police in a drive rescued 19 girls from a brother in Tangail town on Sunday night. However, none was arrested in this connection. Tangail Model police conducted a raid at Kandapara brothel and rescued the girls who were forced into prostitution. Mohammad Ataruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Tangail Model Police Station, said traffickers lured the victims, aged between 10 to 16, with assurance of giving jobs and later brought them to the brothel. A case was filed with the police station accusing owner of the house of the brothel.

Nine shops gutted

At least nine shops were gutted when a fire broke out at Shreeramkathi Bazaar in Nazirpur upazila early yesterday. Shop owners claimed that the fire broke out around 3:30am and gutted at least nine shops of the Bazar. Abdul Khalek Hawladar, officer-in-charge of Nazirpur Police Station, said the fire might have originated from an electric short circuit of a shop and engulfed the adjacent ones.
Housewife commits 'suicide'

A housewife allegedly committed suicide on Sunday afternoon by hanging herself from the ceiling of her house at Bashu Bhanderdah village in Sadar upazila, over a family feud. Police quoted the victim's family members as saying that Dalia Khatun, 33, wife of Israfil Hossain and a mother of three children had, an altercation with her mother-in-law Isha Begum over a trivial matter around 5:30pm. At one stage of their altercation, Dalia went to her bed room and hanged herself from the ceiling. Family members took her to the Chuadanga Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctor declared her dead. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed with the police station in this connection.
