Slack hartal progresses in 8 upazilas
The hartal enforced by BNP in eight upazilas of six districts protesting vote rigging by ruling party 'armed cadres' is progressing peacefully today.
Local units of BNP enforced the strike also to protest against the attacks on pro-BNP candidates and their supporters during the first phase of the elections held in 97 upazilas yesterday.
The upazilas where the hartal is going on are: Bakerganj and Gaurnadi upazilas of Barisal, Sujanagar upazila of Pabna, Sadar and Shailakupa upazilas of Jhenidah, Sonatola upazila of Bogra, Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj district and Sadar upazila of Meherpur district.
BNP has enforced dawn-to-dusk shutdown in all the seven upazilas except Gauranadi, where the party is observing an eight-hour hartal till 2:00pm.
No untoward incident occurred in the upazilas till noon when the report was filed, reports our district correspondents.
Long distance buses were seen parked at the terminals since morning.
Owners of shops and business establishments kept their shutters down in the morning but they opened their outlets around noon, report our correspondents.
BNP joint secretary general Rizvi Ahmed at a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan central office announced the shutdown on behalf on the local BNP units yesterday.
Our Jhenidah correspondent reports AL men vandalised at least 10 houses of BNP men at Boalia village in Shailakupa upazila after pro-AL candidate Mossaraff Hossain Sona Shikder defeated the BNP-backed candidate in the upazila election.
