Cheers (1982 – 1993)
Cheers is an American sitcom that was originally broadcast from 1982 to 1993. The show is set up in a bar named Cheers, where a group of people meet to drink, socialize and relax. The show received high ratings in the United States, earning a top-ten rating during eight of its eleven seasons.
In total, the series was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for all eleven seasons. The show also garnered a record-breaking 117 nominations in Primetime Emmy Awards, from which it bagged 28. During its run, the series was one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, receiving raving appreciation from the audience as well as the critics.
There were six main characters in the show throughout its initial run, with some occasional guest appearances. Sam Malone, portrayed by Ted Danson, is the owner of Cheers and a bartender. Shelly Long portrayed Diane Chambers, an academic and an enlightened graduate student. She becomes a reluctant waitress as she is without a job after being abandoned by her fiancé. Coach Ernie Pantusso is portrayed by Nicholas Colasanto who is a retired coach, bartender and a widower. He is known for his acute interest in listening to people's problems and solving them. Carla Tortelli, portrayed by Rhea Perlman, is a waitress who has a bad reputation for treating customers poorly. Norm Peterson, portrayed by George Wendt, is a regular Cheers customer. Cliff Clavin, played by John Ratzenberger is also a bar regular who is a know-it-all. From the sixth season new characters were introduced, replacing most of the previous characters.
The show's main theme during its early seasons was the romance between Diane and Sam. Cheers touched upon a variety of social issues. In general, the show had recurring themes that played out in every season. What made this show stand out was its boldness in tackling controversial issues such as alcoholism and adultery.
Cheers has garnered a positive reputation over the years for its unique situational comedy. The series is a must-watch for every sitcom enthusiasts.
