Shopkeeper shot for not paying toll
A shopkeeper was shot by an alleged extortionist in the capital’s Boro Maghbazar area yesterday as he refused to pay him Tk 5 lakh.
Injured Masum Billah Joy, 40, owner of Chitrangon Confectionary of the area, said two youths on a motorbike came to his shop around 7:00am. One of them entered the shop and ordered 100 cans of diet coke.
When he was looking for the cans, the man asked him why he had refused to pay him Tk 5 lakh that he demanded over the phone.
“He then shot me and fled,” said Joy.
Joy claimed that he did not know them.
Critically injured Joy was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Talking to The Daily Star at DMCH, Joy said 20 days ago, a man identifying himself as a member of Ramna’s Seven Star group, a local gang, called him over the phone demanding the money.
After the call he had filed a general diary with Ramna Police Staion as the extortionist threatened to kill him if he failed to pay, Joy added.
Officer-in-charge of the PS Moshiur Rahman said, “We have identified the people involved in this incident. We are hoping to arrest them soon.”
