Shibir chief, 13 others expelled
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) has expelled 14 Shibir activists, including the university unit president and general secretary, for vandalising a sculpture and on other charges.
Sust Registrar Ishfaqul Hossain yesterday informed journalists of the expulsion decision.
The university syndicate made the decision at a meeting on Thursday night with Vice-chancellor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan in the chair, he said.
The activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, were found guilty of vandalising the “Chetona Ekattor” sculpture, attacking students and teachers' rally and setting fire to the university vehicles on December 13 last year on the campus, Ishfaqul mentioned.
On January 30, the Sust unit Shibir president Ehsanul Karim and general secretary Sujon Mia and its 12 other activists were suspended on the basis of a probe committee report.
Show cause notices were also served against the Shibir men, asking them to explain within 15 days why they would not be expelled.
Of the expelled students, those who had completed their honours or masters before December 13 would be given their certificates, the registrar added.
Meanwhile, in a statement yesterday, Ehsanul demanded reconsideration of the expulsion order and a fresh investigation into the incidents to find out the real culprits.
