The ancient Greeks believed that there lived a family of deities high up above the clouds in Mount Olympus. They took the form of beautiful, flawless humans but had extraordinary individual powers that separated them from mere mortals. They would visit the common man's land on occasion, and few mortals were also blessed with their gracious presence. These gods and goddesses have, for centuries, been depicted as ethereal beings clad in glowing white robes.

Thousands of years and millions of shades of the rainbow later, the allure of the colour white still remains. Signifying purity, innocence, elegance and an out-of-this-world essence, no one can deny the effortless grace of a person clad in white. The ancient Greeks saw the world in terms of darkness and light, so white was a fundamental colour. White is still a fundamental colour today in fashion, the colour every person goes back to when they want their outfit to boast an air of sophistication.
Staying strong despite changing fashion trends of the ages, white is also universally appreciated. It suits people of every age, and looks good in every season. In summer nothing is more soothing than a white cotton kameez or panjabi. In the winters, embroidered white silk or a white brocade sherwani can lead to quite a staggering effect. And there is no day in the year when wearing a delicate white Jamdani won't get you those coveted head turns!
White is also an excellent backdrop to use if you plan to highlight your accessories. Quite literally a blank canvas, it can easily make your quirky necklace or colourful bag the star of the show.
Some people wrongly think white can only be pulled off by fairer complexions, but in truth white looks beautiful on every type of skin tone. In fact, the best thing about white is that it soothes the eyes and highlights the face.
Makeup wise, there are two ways to go when it comes to white outfits. For daytime looks, keep your makeup fresh and minimal to complement your white attire. For the night, you can go all out and sport a bright lip colour and smokey eyes as the rest of your outfit will be a bit muted. You can also add a few flowers in your hair for that “springtime fairy” effect.
Those who think white cannot be described as a “colour” obviously have not thought about the immediate sight-for-sore-eyes vision that a person in white depicts when they walk into a room. If anything, white has stood the test of time, trends and seasons, and we are certain that it will do so for many days to come.
