SCC to demolish two markets
Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has decided to demolish the shops of Laldighirpar Hawkers Market and the Poura Biponi (now city market) and build new stores in a planned way.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the SCC, headed by Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, on Monday.
Most of the shops at Laldighirpar were built in an unplanned way in the 70s and are now risky. Moreover, some 2,500 shops are now vacated due to poor construction and the narrow lanes leading up to them.
Meanwhile, the Poura Biponi, near the SCC boundary, was declared risky along time back.
The meeting decided to allot the new markets to the existing owners. Already a five-member team has been formed to design the new markets. f
