SCBA protests DMP chief's remarks
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), which is currently dominated by pro-BNP lawyers, yesterday strongly criticised Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Benazir Ahmed for his remarks about the clash on the SC premises on Sunday.
The DMP boss said on Monday that the opposition men used the national institutions (Supreme Court and Jatiya Press Club) as a “political shield”.
“They hired cadres, who demonstrated inside the Supreme Court compound. I would urge the court to take necessary steps against those who were involved in such an incident,” Benazir said, adding that the ruling party men were carrying national flags, not sticks, while marching down the city streets on Sunday.
He also said police entered the SC premises after taking permission from the court authorities.
On Sunday, AL activists attacked some pro-BNP lawyers entering the SC premises when the lawyers were staging an anti-government demonstration the in support of BNP's “march for democracy”. At least five pro-opposition lawyers sustained injuries in the attack.
In a statement, the SCBA said “such a political statement” of the DMP commissioner, as a government official, was "unwarranted, arrogant and irresponsible". The bar association requests the DMP chief to withdraw his statement, it added.
The lawyers' association also demanded that the government take appropriate legal action against those who attacked the lawyers on the SC premises and against the police personnel for their negligence in duties on the basis of video footage of the media.
