SC urged to be more tolerant
Referring to the recent contempt rule issued to the Bangla daily Prothom Alo, Law Reporters Forum (LRF), a body of reporters covering the Supreme Court events, yesterday called on the court to be more tolerant and liberal.
In a statement, LRF President Salehuddin and General Secretary Wakil Ahmed Hiron said, "The journalists' community of Bangladesh is always vocal for the independence of the judiciary, and they are respectful to the dignity of court. We hope that the same way, the court will remain watchful about the dignity and freedom of journalists."
On Sunday, the High Court asked Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman and Joint Editor Mizanur Rahman to explain why they would not be subjected to a contempt proceeding for publishing the article, “Minute-e Ekti Agam Jamin Kivabe” (how an anticipatory bail possible in a minute), on February 28.
“We have seen that few senior lawyers told the court concerned that the journalists have to be brought to the High Court and be kept standing before it for an entire day. We feel this is a colonial mentality and venting of some other anger,” reads the statement.
The LRF leaders said the lawyers should remember that the significance of justice lay in not maligning or disrespecting anyone. “There may be mistakes or lapses in the writing of journalists. LRF expects the court to help the journalists correct those mistakes through its judicious judgments and directives.”
