SC upholds bail for Shuvo
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court verdict that granted Asif Adnan Shuvo, who was allegedly recruited as an IS fighter, bail in a criminal case, clearing the way for his release from jail.
Shuvo, 26, son of former High Court judge Abdus Salam Mamun, has been accused under Anti-terrorism Act 2009 for “conspiring to commit terrorist and militant activities”.
Shuvo was arrested from his Segunbagicha residence in Dhaka on September 24.
Shahbagh police filed the case the same day on the charges of his involvement in militant and terrorist activities.
Yesterday, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC, passed “no order” on a petition recently filed by the government seeking stay on the HC verdict that granted Shuvo permanent bail on December 23.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told The Daily Star that the HC verdict will remain in force and therefore, Shuvo will get released from jail in this case.
