SC directs prime accused to surrender in two weeks

The Supreme Court yesterday directed Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, the prime accused in the case filed for the murder of Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque, to surrender before the lower court concerned in Feni within two weeks.
The SC also stayed a High Court order that granted bail to Mahtab in the case.
Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the government seeking stay on the HC order.
If Mahtab does not surrender in two weeks, an arrest warrant will be issued against him, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told The Daily Star.
Ekramul Haque, 45, was shot and then burnt to death in his car in Feni town on May 20.
Rezaul Haque Jasim, brother of the victim, filed the case the same day accusing Mahtab and around 35 unnamed others.
Police have so far arrested 31 people including Mahtab. The HC granted him six months' bail on July 15 and he was released from jail two days later.
The government yesterday filed the petition with the SC saying as there are specific allegations against Mahtab regarding the killing, he should not be granted bail.

‘ইরান আত্মসমর্পণ করবে না’

আলি খামেনি বলেন, ‘যারা ইরান, এর জনগণ ও ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে জানেন তারা এমন ভাষায় হুমকি দেন না। কারণ, ইরানিরা আত্মসমর্পণ করা জাতি নয়।’
