Robbers kill youth, injure 23 others in Munshiganj
A young man was hacked to death and 23 others were injured by robbers in two villages of Sirajdikhan upazila of the district early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Rinku shil, 22, son of Dilip Shil of Shekhornagar Dakkhinhati village.
Affected locals said the robbers looted at least 64 tolas of gold, cash Tk 2.6 lakh and other valuables from five houses.
Four of the critically injured -- Pankaj Manumder, Dipak Mandal, Anwar Bepari and Dr. Sajib -- were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Munshiganj Police Superintendent Md Zakir Hossain Majumder said, a gang of 20 to 25 armed robbers wearing masks swooped on the house of one Anwar Bepari at Tegharia village at around 1:45am.
The gang members looted valuables and hacked three people there before committing robberies in four other houses at the adjoining Shekharnagar Dakkhinhati village.
Sensing the presence of the robbers, villagers chased them with locally made weapons. While fleeing, the robbers opened fire indiscriminately on the villagers, leaving Rinku critically injured.
At a stage, the robbers stabbed Rinku to death with the help of spears and then decamped through the Arial Beel (waterbody).
Officer in-charge (OC) Sirajdikhan police station Abul Basar said police detained ten people in connection with the robberies.
The body of Rinku was sent to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Rinku, a worker at a salon, had married only eight months ago.
