Robber kingpin killed in Magura ‘gunfight’

An alleged local robber kingpin was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Magura Sadar upazila in the early hours of today.

The deceased was Ujjal Hossain, 32, son of Awal Hossain from the upazila and the kingpin of an inter-district robbery gang, our Jhenaidah correspondent reports quoting police.

The gang attempted a robbery on Magura-Narail highway at Mandartala around 2:00am, said Sudarshan Kumar Roy, assistant superintendent of Magura Sadar Police Station.

“They blocked the road with logs. A patrolling team of police noticed the road blockade and tried to clear the road. It was then the robbers opened gunfire,” he said.

“Police were compelled to fire back. Ujjal was found wounded in the spot after the battle subsided. He died on the way to Magura General Hospital,” ASP Sudarshan said.

A pistol, four bullets, a saw and some other robbery equipments were found from the spot. 

“Three policemen were injured during the battle. They received first aid treatments at a local hospital,” the police official said.

According to him, Ujjal was accused in four cases including the charges of robbery and snatching in separate districts. A case was filed over his death.
