Robber killed in Noakhali ‘gunfight’
A robber was killed in an alleged gunfight between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members in Companyganj upazila of Noakhali early today.
The dead -- Shahdad Hossain Jasu, 39, was the ringleader of a robbers gang, reports our Noakhali correspondent quoting Maj Md Sahed Hassan, deputy director of Rab-11.
Jasu is accused in a total of 20 cases including abduction and killing, said Sajidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Companyganj Police Station.
The elite force members recovered three firearms.
On information, a team of Rab-11 conducted a raid at a garden near a fort at Urirchar in Char Elahi area in the upazila and laid a siege to the area where the robbers took position, said Maj Sahed who led the team in the operation.
The robbers, sensing the law enforcers' presence, fired at the Rab personnel around 11:00am today, the official said.
He added that the Rab men retaliated with fire that triggered a gunfight there and Jasu came in line with the firing and died on the spot.
