Rivalry over new CU body sparked it

Rivalry between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League regarding getting their own candidates into the upcoming committee of Chittagong University unit led to the beating of a central Awami League leader on the campus by one of the faction on Sunday, said BCL activists.
The present committee was formed on June 26, 2011 for one year, with Mamunul Hoque and MA Khaled Chowdhury as president and general secretary respectively. Though the 238-member committee expired in 2012, it is yet to be dissolved.
Later, on August 27, 2013, a fraction of BCL Chittagong University unit declared Mamunul a persona non-grata on the campus alleging his connection with Islami Chhatra Shibir.
However, Mamunul denied the allegation of having connection with Shibir.
Jalal Ahmed, office secretary of BCL CU unit and a previous follower of Mamunul, said recently attacked AL leader Nasir Haider Babul backed Mamunul when previous committee was forming.
He said Babul had been backing BCL CU unit vice-president Mahfuzur Rahman and joint secretary Sumon Mamun for next committee as president and general secretary.

Other rival candidates are Jalal himself, SM Ariful Islam, Sabbir Ahmed Chowdhury, Habibur Rahman Robin, Rupon Biswas, and Sarowar Parvez Jonny, said BCL sources.
Sources in the BCL said these six candidates had been leading shuttle train-based group Varsity Express. Babul earlier claimed that members of VX had assaulted him on Sunday.
Some BCL men attacked me thinking that I was opposing their candidacies, Babul said.
Contacted by The Daily Star, all the six candidates denied their involvement in the attack.
