Removal goes on, but at a snail's pace
Kaliganj upazila administration under the district has started removing an illegal brick kiln from Sree Khata village on June 1 although the Supreme Court passed an order on May 8, asking the district administration to do the job within a month.
The upazila administration has engaged some women labourers working under 40-day job scheme to remove the brick kiln. But locals said it is impossible to finish the work by the labourers within the time.
Sources in the district administration said one Nazrul Islam set up the brick kiln at the village without taking permission from the district administration and the Department of Environment (DoE) in January 2010.
As locals filed a complaint to the district administration, it sealed off the brick kiln on January 5, 2011. Challenging the action of the district administration, Nazrul filed a petition with the High Court. After hearing, the court rejected his petition and issued an order on February 27, 2013, asking the district administration to demolish the illegal brick kiln in a month.
Brick field owner Nazrul later appealed to the Supreme Court. The apex court rejected the appeal on February 27 this year. It also asked the district administration to execute the High Court order.
