Quader asks BCL to suspend 2 JnU men

Upon intervention of Awami League presidium member and Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League suspended Jagannath University unit general secretary Sirajul Islam and organising secretary Shamim Ahmed yesterday, five days after the two threatened a teacher at gunpoint.
They were punished for anti-organisational activities, BCL General Secretary Siddiqui Nazmul Alam told The Daily Star.
In a statement yesterday, the pro-ruling party student body also said JnU Joint Secretary Mofizul Islam was made the acting general secretary of the unit. According to BCL sources, Mofizul is accused of assaulting a teacher and loyal to Nazmul Alam.
On Thursday, Siraj and Shamim stormed into the room of Prof Sayed Alam, who heads a committee to purchase Tk 5 lakh worth of furniture for the university common room, and threatened him with a pistol, demanding that instead of the contractor, they be given the relevant document to procure the furniture. Two days later, the university authorities suspended the two.
Sources said Obaidul Quader, also a former BCL president, called incumbent BCL President Badiuzzaman Shohag Monday night while he was holding a meeting with JnU teachers' association and pro-AL teachers' panel who demanded expulsion of Siraj. Shohag admitted getting the call.
BCL insiders said Nazmul tried to save Siraj as the latter was loyal to him. But he failed due to Obaidul Quader's intervention, they added.
