Writ seeks stay on district council polls

A writ petition was filed with the High Court today seeking a stay on holding the elections to district councils scheduled for December 28.
Advocate Eunus Ali Akond, a Supreme Court lawyer, submitted the petition challenging the legality of the provision of district council law that allows indirect voting to the elections.
In the petition, he said there are some provisions in the district council act which allow an electoral body to cast votes in the district council elections.
These provisions are against the constitution as there is no system of electoral bodies voting in the elections. The voters are supposed to cast their votes directly in elections of the country under the constitution.
He prayed to the HC to issue a rule upon the authorities concerned of the government to explain why these provisions should not be declared unconstitutional.
Eunus told reporters that the HC may hold hearing of the petition later in the day.
