Opposition now helpless amid govt arrogance: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today alleged that the government’s ‘unbridled falsehood and arrogance have made’ their own party and all other opposition ones as well as common people helpless.
In a statement, he also alleged that the government is jailing BNP leaders and activists, including the central and grassroots ones, as part of its agenda to establish an individual’s rule in the country by destroying BNP, the most ‘popular’ party.
The statement was issued voicing concern over the jailing of its joint secretary general Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel.
Earlier in the day, separate Dhaka courts sent Sohel to jail by rejecting his bail petitions in 41 cases after he surrendered before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court.
Fakhrul alleged that the government is harassing BNP leaders and activists by implicating them in ‘false and fabricated’ cases with a political motive.
“It’s become a tradition under the rule of this government to send our leaders and activists to jail instead of giving them bail, though they surrender before the court in false cases showing respect to it,” he said.
The BNP leader also alleged that the government is defaming revered politicians by arresting them in ‘false’ charges and politically harassing them with a motive to stop their voice against its misdeeds. “It can’t be a healthy politics.”
He said the government’s attitude suggests that it in no way can tolerate the opinions of its opponents as it is trying to promptly cement one-party governing system by squeezing all the democratic spaces.
Fakhrul said Sohel, also the member secretary of BNP’s Dhaka city unit, was sent to jail as part of the government’s move to destroy the party.
He called upon all, irrespective of party and opinion, to be vocal from their respective positions to get rid of the government’s repressive acts and misrule.
The BNP leader also demanded the government release Sohel immediately after withdrawing all the ‘false’ cases filed against him.
